Pelican Colts FC, a Community’s Comeback and Premier League Support

The article highlights the resilience and unity demonstrated by Pelican Colts FC following a devastating incident of vandalism at their home ground.

On September 6, travellers caused significant damage, halting games and training for the local youth football club.

The community rallied together in response, launching a GoFundMe campaign that quickly gathered support.

Notable contributions included a generous £1,000 donation from Brennan Johnson and a matching donation from Nottingham Forest's owner, Evangelos Marinakis.

The narrative emphasises the critical role of grassroots football in fostering community bonds and nurturing young talent, illustrating how football transcends the sport to become a shared identity that uplifts individuals in challenging times. As Pelican Colts FC begins its recovery, the article serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of grassroots football and the power of collective action.

Grassroots Football: The Heart of the Community

In the heart of Nottingham, grassroots football clubs like Pelican Colts FC and Dunkirk FC do more than just cultivate local talent—they serve as pillars of community pride, bringing people together in ways that go beyond the beautiful game.

These clubs thrive on passion and togetherness, providing a space where young players grow and fans build lifelong bonds. They bring kids together not only to play a game of football and to show off their talents and enjoyment for the game but also to forge new lifelong friendships with other kids that they would not normally meet outside of the game. Parents and guardians also form new friendships along the way.

From these bonds, clubs thrive, and moving forward, some of these parents become valuable volunteers who keep clubs ticking over and moving forward.

The Incident: Pelican Colts FC’s Building Destroyed

On September 6, travellers set up camp on the Dave Eastwood Ground, the home of Pelican Colts FC. This immediately halted any games and training sessions scheduled for that Saturday and Sunday and during the coming week until a court order could be gained for their eviction.

The court order was granted a week later, but the travellers left not without incident.
Instead of departing quietly, they decided to destroy the newly refurbished changing rooms, which had not yet been used, damaged the goals, and inflicted thousands of pounds worth of damage on the pitches.

In response to this devastation, a GoFundMe page was set up, hoping that the football community would come together to help raise enough funds to get Pelican Colts FC back on its feet and the kids back in their boots playing football again.

The Chairman, Steve “Coco” Chaplin, expressed his deep disappointment, stating, “It’s the worst case of vandalism I’ve seen at the club in decades. I’m absolutely gutted. God knows what the kids are going to feel like. It’s a kids' football ground, not adults – this is a youth football club. I’m struggling to take it all in.”

Within days of the fundraising page going live and clubs like us sharing the page and news about the event, funds started pouring in, along with offers of help from local tradesmen.

Brennan Johnson: From Dunkirk FC to Premier League Stardom

Unless you’ve ever been involved in grassroots football, it’s difficult to grasp what it means to those who are - both on the pitch and off.

It’s heartwarming to know that players who achieve success in the professional game never forget their roots, such as our own Brennan Johnson.

Just a stone's throw from Pelican Colts FC, Dunkirk FC played a pivotal role in the early career of Brennan Johnson. His journey from Dunkirk’s humble pitches to Nottingham Forest and now Tottenham Hotspur illustrates the vital role grassroots football plays in developing world-class talent.

His story serves as a reminder of what local clubs like Pelican and Dunkirk represent - hope, opportunity, and the potential to make dreams a reality.

After hearing of the devastation at Pelican, Johnson wasted no time in donating £1,000 and left a brief message: “Hope you all get back on the pitch soon.”

Nottingham Forest Owner Steps In: A Gesture of Solidarity

As the donations grew, an unexpected but deeply appreciated gesture came from Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest. Hearing of Pelican Colts FC’s plight, Marinakis matched the amount raised by the GoFundMe campaign, which at that point was £8,000.

His contribution didn’t just offer financial relief; it highlighted the solidarity between professional and grassroots football, reinforcing the idea that without clubs like Pelican and Dunkirk, the stars of tomorrow wouldn’t have a platform to launch their careers.

He wrote directly to the club's chairman, Steve Chaplin:

"I was saddened to hear about the recent vandalism that has caused considerable damage to your club and its facilities. It is deeply frustrating to see a place that means so much to so many people in our community subjected to such deplorable behaviour.
Despite this significant setback, I want to commend you on your fundraising efforts and your commitment to revitalising the club and supporting your members, young players, and their families.

At Nottingham Forest, we are proud of the work we do in our local community. To support your refurbishment initiatives, I would like to match the funding of £8,000 you have already raised.

I hope this contribution helps you rebuild and improve your facilities, ensuring that Pelican Colts FC continues to thrive as a welcoming space for young aspiring footballers in our city. Together, we can turn this unfortunate incident into an opportunity for growth and renewal.
Our club executives will be in touch in the coming days to arrange the donation on my behalf.

Wishing every success as you rebuild."

Marinakis’ words and actions not only offered vital financial support but also sent a message of unity and hope to everyone involved in Pelican Colts FC.

His generosity demonstrated the importance of community at every level of football, and how the professional game can support grassroots initiatives when they need it most.

As communities come together to support their local clubs, they are also reinforcing the values of teamwork, determination, and resilience - qualities that extend far beyond the football pitch.

Ultimately, the story of Pelican Colts FC is a powerful reminder that grassroots football is about more than just the game. It’s about people coming together, standing shoulder to shoulder, and supporting one another through thick and thin. Whether it’s repairing a pitch, fundraising for facilities, or simply showing up to cheer on the players, this collective effort reflects the unwavering spirit of grassroots football and the communities it serves.
